Focus On - Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs

(Marc Jacobs backstage at Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2009 show)

  • Jacobs enrolled at Parsons School of Design. For his graduation project, he designed a collection of oversized hand-knit sweaters, which he sold to Charivari.
  • In 1984, Jacobs was hired by the clothing manufacturer Reuben Thomas, Inc., for which he designed the Sketchbook label.
  • In 1986, Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy (an executive at Reuben Thomas Inc) established a partnership and  Jacobs showed his first collection bearing the Marc Jacobs label.
  • In 1987, he became the youngest designer ever to receive the CFDA's Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent.
  • In 1988 Jacobs was named vice president of women’s design at Perry Ellis, where he worked till 1993.
  • In 1993, Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy launched their own licensing and design company, and in April 1994, Jacobs showed his comeback collection.
  • In 1997, he was named creative director of Louis Vuitton.
  • In the spring of 2001, Jacobs introduced his secondary line, Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Marc Jacobs is another one of those designers that does so much. He has three collections that he designs for, yet the great ideas keep coming. One thing I like about Marc is that he is not afraid to use colour we always see great colour pallets from his collections. He is a designer whose collections I'm always excited to see and who I always expect a lot from because I know he has the ability to produce great collections.

I honestly don’t know what my favourite Marc Jacobs collection is, there are so many to pick from. The one I decided to go with was the Louis Vuitton Fall 2012 Ready-to-Wear collection. My reason for picking this show was that I really enjoyed it. Its definitely not the best Marc Jacobs collection, but I loved the concept, the train was beautiful and I think it’s one of the better ideas for a show that I have seen. I also really loved the bags in this show I wanted every single one. This show made me so happy when I saw it, I hope you enjoy. Marc Jacobs I love you.

Senait Gidey - Dress to Kill Magazine Summer 2012

I think Canadian model Senait Gide is great, but I have not seen her in a lot of things, so I was happy when I came across this editorial called 'Paradis Blanc' for the summer 2012 issue of Dress to Kill Magazine. Lily & Lilac were the photographers and the looks from Louis Vuitton, Donna Karan, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Ports 1961, Christopher Kane and Malgorzata Dudek were styled by Nadia Pizzimenti. The pictures are stunning Senait looks so elegant and regal.

Born on October 6, 1984 in Poland, Magdalena was discovered when her mother sent her pictures to a Warsaw agency's modelling contest. She won, & was scouted by Darek Kumosa of Model Plus Agency. She has gone on to appear on the covers of Japanese, Italian, German, Korean, Portuguese & Russian Vogue & French Numéro as well as appearing in editorials for American, British, Spanish, Mexico/ Latin America & French Vogue, V, Pop, Harper's Bazaar, i-D & Allure. She has also been in ads for Givenchy, Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, Prada & Gianfranco Ferré.

I think it’s pretty obvious what I like most about Magdalena considering my love of cheekbones, I just love her bone structure, she has such an incredible face. In my mind, the symmetry of her face is perfect, and because she is such a good model she has learnt how to position her face so that in every picture you see of her no matter which way she is facing, her bone structure stands out. People always use the saying ‘legs for days’ to describe someone with long legs, well Magdalena has ‘cheekbones for weeks’.

Magdalena is another model I have been seeing for a while, but it was not until I saw the November 2011 issue of Vogue that I noticed what a great model she was. The pictures were so simple and in black and white but she really stood out. Under all the hair and great styling, her face structure still stole the show.

Born on 20 December 1983 in the Netherlands, Lara was discovered on the Paris Metro while on vacation with her family when she was 14, then she took part in the Elite Model Look competition and even though she did not win, she impressed the executives and was signed to Elite Modelling Agency. She has gone on to appear on the cover of American, British, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, French, Russian, Turkey & Netherlands Vogue, i-D, French Numéro, V & W and she has appeared in editorials for Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Interview & many more. (Vogue China March 2011: Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin - Photographer, Nicoletta Santoro - Fashion Editor/Stylist)

The thing I love the most about Lara is the bottom half of her face. Her whole face is beautiful but I love her jawline, her chin and lips and of course her gap tooth. Theses are the things that set her apart from other models, because I don't know any other models, that have her jawline mixed with all her other gorgeous features.

The first time I really took notice of Lara was when I saw her editorial in the March 2008 edition of French Vogue. This is when it dawned upon me how extremely beautiful her face is. The light was hitting her face perfectly and the hair and make-up was so simple yet really beautiful, this styling also went perfectly with the shoot. I just loved it.

Born on February 28, 1982 in Russia, Natalia was discovered after attending a modelling academy and moving to Paris. She has appeared in American, British, Italian, French, Turkey, China, Russia & German Vogue as well as Pop, V, Harper's Bazaar, i-D & L'officiel. She has also graced the cover of many of those magazines as well as ELLE, French Numéro, Tatler and many more. She has been in campaigns for Givenchy, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Diane von Fürstenberg & Chanel.

(Louis VuittonSpring/Summer 2008: Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott - Photographer, Unknown - Stylist)

The thing I love the most about Natalia are her eyes and lips, that's what I always notice first when I see pictures of her. She is such a great model that she has the ability to transform in every picture, so the way that I am able to recognize her most of the time is because of her eyes and lips.
(Vogue China - June 2011: Peter Lindbergh - Photographer, Nicoletta Santoro - Fashion Editor/Stylist)

The first time I really took notice of Natalia was when I saw the Russian Vogue September 2010 issue. This was not the first time I had seen Natalia, but the pictures were so beautiful that it put her in the list of my top ten models. I could not find one thing that I did not like about the pictures and I wanted everything she was wearing from the clothes to the accessories. I love this shoot.
